St. Patrick's Day

St. Patty's Day came and there were not only 2 Kilts made but 3. Once I figured out what I was doing they were easy to make. We had plently of fabric left over so I was able to make myself one as well. I just modified it a bit to make it more girlie.

Kurt and Jacob made it to school with their Kilts on but they didn't make it much farther. They were called down to the office during their first period classes and forced to take the kilts off. The school told them that it was too much of a distraction. They disagreed, and they made sure that the school realized what a distraction really was. Very class they went to they rallied to students and asked to go to the administration and teacher who were opposed to the Kilts and complain. It would have been far less a distraction for Kurt and Jacob to wear the Kilts.

From an Irish girl a couple days late, Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Get Your Kilt On

My Little Brother, Kurt and "adopted" little brother Jacob, have roped me in again. I have just two days to make them Kilts, so that they can wear them to school for St. Patrick's Day. The Irish in me just couldn't say no to the challenge. Plus I gained 2 awesome helpers who are willing to help me out however they can to get their Kilts done. They already made a Starbucks run. Woot
The pattern is cut out and the fabric is washing. I'm hoping to at least get everything cut out tonight.

Beloved

Sunday I was yucky, I felt yucky, I felt gross outside and inside. I had slept through my alarm clock and missed church. (by slept through I mean that my alarm went off twice and groggy morning Erin, who I don't claim any relation to, turned it off knowing full well that she/I would probably not wake up) When I actually woke up and the reality of missing church hit me, I was mad and disappointed in myself. I was cranky with my mom. I was mad about my tv fast that i'm doing, and whiny in my heart about it. I was in need of a shower, and I was on my period. I was totally discouraged with who I was. I felt beyond yucky!

I didn't feel like approaching God, not at all, but I knew that I needed to. I went to put on some music in the background to start my Bible time. I turned on Pandora, (which we can now play through our TV's surround sound system, my new favorite thing) letting whatever station was on before come on, playing whichever song it wanted to play me. The song that came on was "Beloved" by Tenth Avenue North. Here are the lyrics:

Love of my life
Look deep in my eyes
There you will find what you need
Give me your life
Lust and the lies
The past you’re afraid I might see
You’ve been running away from me

You’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
It binds you to me
It’s a mystery

Love of my life
Look deep in my eyes
There you will find what you need
I‘m the giver of life
I’ll clothe you in white
My immaculate bride you will be
Oh come running home to me

You’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
It binds you to me

Well you’ve been a mistress, my wife
Chasing lovers it won’t satisfy
Won’t you let me make you my bride
You will drink of my lips
And you’ll taste new life

Cause you’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
And it binds you to me

You’re my beloved
Forever we’ll be
Our love it unites us
And it binds you to me
It’s a mystery

I sat on my couch and wept. Here I was feeling super gross and yucky, feeling unlovable feeling Like "who would want this?" and God said "I do, I want you." Through all my faults He still saw me as beloved, and He still calls me "mine," He still asks me to be His bride. What a wonderful, loving, and tender God. He is so sweet! I still have a hard time grasping and understanding the way that he chooses to see me.

I use to listen to this song all the time, and God used it powerfully then, but I hadn't listened to it for a long time. The very next day my friend Liz, who I also have talked to in a while, wrote me this message:

Your "Back to Eden" post on God's love made me think back to a cherished memory I have never forgotten- you sharing the tenderness and gentleness of God's love through the Tenth Avenue North song "Beloved." You mentioned how the consistency of it coming on shuffle as you walked around campus seemed to be in line with your sensitivity to receiving more of God's sweet love for you. It seemed to come more on days when you could receive it and it didn't come on days when you felt more sensitive to His love. So precious. He's so sensitive and loving. I really appreciated reading your post. It made me miss you so very much. Hope all is well. :)

The very next day He chose to remind me once again of how very much He loves me. Through my crap, through my sin, even through my unshoweredness, nothing I could do will make Him say "I don't want you anymore."  Instead his heart continues to long for mine. Where ever you are I pray that you would know that the same it true of you. God's heart is longing for yours, to Him you could not be anymore beautiful that you are this moment, you are His beloved, and nothing you could do would make Him say "I don't want you"

"That was Me"

I was recently able to make a trip to Bowling Green, and my week there was filled to the brim with visits with friends that I haven't gotten to talk to in a long time. There was lots of updating to be done, and my friends all were ready to dive below the surface, and to know, "How's it really going?" None of them just wanted the good stuff, they all wanted to hear about the struggles too, and they were all ready to help and encourage me in any way that they could. Hard conversations, joyful conversations, words celebrating God, and his work in my life. Grace and truth abounded. Love was poured out on me.

Today I was driving in my car and reflecting on all of this - how very good it felt to have these people who know me and who very tangibly love me - when God very sweetly whispered, "That was Me" in my ear.  It has taken me the day to turn over these three very simple words in my heart. When is saw my friends hearts holding me dear, loving me, rooting for me, teaching me; I was seeing God and his affections for me. He is not loving me from some far off distant place. He is loving me through the people and circumstances he is surrounding me with.

I forget how real God's love for me is. But it is as real as real the conversation over Starbuck's coffee, containing wisdom, truth, concern and laughter. As real as a late night full of dreaming of what things might be. When I see a friend get overwhelming excited about the work that God's doing in my life, that doesn't even begin to touch how excited God is for me.  God wants to poor even more wisdom in me than the friend who so wisely asked, "Do you need grace or truth?" When I got to sit with  bunch of friends who are in the same place of life I am, and dealing with similar things, God was displaying his understanding.  Even the all to brief bear hug from a friend at church who I only got to see for a split second, displayed God's joy of just being able to see, and be with me, and know me.

When I feel like God is distant, when I forget how real He is, how present He is, I can look to my friends. I can feel their tangible love for me, and I can remember that God's love is deeper, and greater. The characteristics inside them are only glimpses of the characteristics of God. Suddenly God seems very real, very tangible, very concrete. It doesn't seem near as hard to seek Him, and to be with Him, and to know Him.

Facebook: Not until you are older.

Remember all of the things that your parents made you wait until you were older to do? I do!

Having my own phone in my room: 8
Staying up until 9 pm: 10
Having my own TV in my room: 12 (secretly the curfew went out the window with that installation)
Staying up until 10pm: about 14
Shaving my legs: 10 (I started that one without permission.)
Dating: 16
Cell Phone: 16 (funny enough, my 14 year old brother Adam got one at the same time I did)
Driving our Jet ski: 14 (Little brother, Adam got to learn that one at the same time I did as well. That means there was a 12 year old driving a jet-ski, not the best choice ever I am sure)
Pulling our jet-ski and putting it in the water: Apparently I'm still not old enough for that one.

The list could go on and on including the things I couldn't wait to do and then suddenly realized that I should have never learned them at all, like cutting the grass. Big mistake to learn that one, our yard is huge!

I was thinking about all of these, and started to wonder if someday I will be trying to decide at what age I should let my kids join facebook. I can just imagine sitting on the bleachers watching my kid's football practice discussing with fellow parents if our kids are old enough and mature enough to start their own facebook page, and what do we think is the appropriate age for them to start one. I can also imagine fighting with my daughter as she tells me through her tears that both Cindy and Emma have one, and it's not fair because she feels so out of the loop.

What do you think? Will this become a wait-till-you're-older parent child battle? Has it already? To what age should we make our kids wait?

On Choosing A Soccer Team

Recently I have had some friends who have gotten really into soccer. They had never been excited about sports before, so I was excited just to see them getting into it. When they talk about soccer it's like they are talking another language, and they were all deciding which teams they wanted to stand behind. I thought it might be fun to join with them and also pick a team. At least then I would know what they were talking about, and so my journey began.

First I thought I would just look for one of those facebook quizzes "Which soccer team are you?" This didn't really work since the were picking teams from a specific league and my result from the quiz, Barcelona, was not in the league.

Next I read an article by a guy who was going through the same process, he too was trying to pick a team. He gave some good information, but not enough to convince me to choose a team to root for, for the rest of my life.

I then moved to pick my friend Alyssa's brain. She asked me all the things I like about a team in general. I thought about my Buckeyes and listed all the things that I admire about them. Alyssa suggested looking into Manchester United. Since this was the only one of the teams that I had heard of before, I decided to give them a try. I searched it through Swag Bucks (my very new favorite thing) and started reading about the team.

Manchester Untied just didn't feel right, and I was feeling frustrated because I was spending more time on soccer than it really deserves, and that is when it hit me. No soccer team would ever feel right, when I already cheer for the greatest sport AMERICAN football, and the greatest team THE Ohio State University. Why did I feel that I needed anything else when I had football? The answer was obvious, not to choose a team.

I mean seriously put a soccer team and a football team on a field together, and just see who comes out victorious. When the World Cup started last summer, I tried to follow it, seriously I tired. During evey single game I feel asleep. I don't need another sport to nap during when I already have Nascar.

Sorry soccer, but this is one girl who could never imagine being fan.

Top 10 ways that Hiro might die at the Colopy house.

Hiro is a yorkiepoo that my family has been dog sitting, and has at this point become part of the family. I constantly hear my dad plotting with Hiro his plan of how to hide him when his mom come to take him home. He has been with us for 3 months and we have 2 more to go. Although my family has had many dogs in the past, they have been all rather large dogs, Labrador Retrievers and German Shorthairs. Hiro is maybe 7 pounds, he is tiny, he sleeps on our beds at night and we sometimes never notice. His small size has made me very nervous that we will kill him. The following is the top ten ways that Hiro might die while we watch him.

10.Trampled: There are many things that could trample this dog. We have stepped on him a few times, and if one happened to step on him just right, (or rather just wrong) I'm pretty sure it could break his neck. He also likes to run around and underfoot the neighbor's horses, constantly barking. They just may trample him to eliminate the nuisance.

9. Butter: We use to leave a stick of butter on the table covered on a butter dish. We stopped when Hiro ate the entire stick of butter. The rest of the night was filled with foamy throw-up.

8. Thanksgiving Dinner: This would be more of a murder. Hiro enters into barking fits where stands on the window seat barking passionately at what appears to be absolutely nothing. I understand when he see the neighbors walking, or when a person drives up our drive way, or even on occasion when he sees deer in the front yard, but most of the time there is nothing out there. Still, he barks as if he is trying to alert people that the second coming is upon us. I have threatened him on several occasions that if he doesn't stop we maybe having yorkiepoo for Thanksgiving instead of turkey. (This one is low on the list because obviously it would never happen, nor do I condone eating dogs just for the record.)

7. Buckeye: Hiro has occasionally entertained himself by throwing around a buckeye nut. These nuts, however are poisonous and should he decide to chew one it could be very bad.

Squirrel Chasing
6. Squirrel: Hiro love to chase squirrels, but really they are not that much smaller than he is. I'm pretty sure that at this point they are plotting to take him down, and I'm pretty sure that they could do it.

5. Peter: Peter is our German Shorthair obsessed with killing Hiro. At first we thought that maybe Peter wanted to be his friend, but ohhhhh no! Trust me Peter wants to kill him. For the most part Peter lives in the barn, but when he is our running around the yard, he circles the house knowing that Hiro is inside. He jumps on the screen door threating to destroy it. The first time Peter saw Hiro, he wailed as if there were no more female dog left in the world when Hiro was taken away. He is obsessed with Hiro more than I have seen a dog be obsessed with anything else.

4. Asphyxiation: One night my brother came home and I and Hiro went outside to greet him. My brother and I unloaded his car and went inside, and about 20 min later I realized that Hiro had not come inside with us. I went out to get him, but couldn't find him anywhere. I was starting to get nervous because it was dark out, and I did not feel like traipsing around the neighborhood to find him. Plus I was worried about the multiple beasts that could grab him. We finally found him shut in my brothers car, he must have jumped in while we were unloading it. I could just imagine us looking for him for hours while he was in the driveway the whole time running out of oxygen.

3. Dishwashed: I realized this one when I discovered that I had a new way of seeing whether or not the dishes in the dishwaher were dirty or clean. If the dishwasher door was open and Hiro was not around it then the dishes were clean. However if when the door is open he is standing with all four paws on the door, trying to get as far into the washer as possible to lick all the plates; well in that case the dishes are dirty. I was watching him trying to get as far into the dishwasher as possible and it occured to me that if someone wasn't paying attention they could easily close him up inside and start the dishwasher without knowing that he was in it. Could you imagine the terror of being dishwashed to death? Pitch black, scalding hot water coming from all directions, knives to dodge! An irrational fear of dishwashers just started.

2. Ping Pong Balls: This ranks so high because it really almost happened. Hiro became very sick one day, he couldn't move, he whimpered, his whole body shook, and he had ooey messes wherever he went. My dad took him to the vet and our best guess is that he ate a ping pong ball. Hiro loves ping pong balls. They are light, they bounce well, and he can throw them around easily. Hiro would entertain himself with a ping pong ball for hours until he decided he was done with the game and chew up the ball. Our best guess it that he ate part of the ball and it made him very sick. Unfortunately for Hiro he is not allowed to play with ping pong balls anymore.

1. Coyotes: We actually have coyotes hangin around where we live, and in there den they have found remnants of small dogs that they have eaten. If a coyote got a hold of Hiro he would be, quite literally, dead meat.  Everytime I let him out at night I'm afraid he won't come back. A few days ago my family had left for a fall Friday night football game. We left at 5:30 laiden with many blankets and and coats to keep us warm. Somehow Hiro snuck out with us as we were carrying everything out, and nobody noticed. We left the house with him running around outside. When we got back at 10:30 Hiro pranced happily up to our car to the horror of everyone in it. It was about 33 degress outside, and that fact that he both escaped all the coyotes and the cold is a miracle.

We love Hiro and we hope that he makes it through his stay with us, but the dangers are very real. It's tough out their for a Yorkiepoo.
