Recently I have had some friends who have gotten really into soccer. They had never been excited about sports before, so I was excited just to see them getting into it. When they talk about soccer it's like they are talking another language, and they were all deciding which teams they wanted to stand behind. I thought it might be fun to join with them and also pick a team. At least then I would know what they were talking about, and so my journey began.
First I thought I would just look for one of those facebook quizzes "Which soccer team are you?" This didn't really work since the were picking teams from a specific league and my result from the quiz, Barcelona, was not in the league.
Next I read an article by a guy who was going through the same process, he too was trying to pick a team. He gave some good information, but not enough to convince me to choose a team to root for, for the rest of my life.
I then moved to pick my friend Alyssa's brain. She asked me all the things I like about a team in general. I thought about my Buckeyes and listed all the things that I admire about them. Alyssa suggested looking into Manchester United. Since this was the only one of the teams that I had heard of before, I decided to give them a try. I searched it through Swag Bucks (my very new favorite thing) and started reading about the team.
Manchester Untied just didn't feel right, and I was feeling frustrated because I was spending more time on soccer than it really deserves, and that is when it hit me. No soccer team would ever feel right, when I already cheer for the greatest sport AMERICAN football, and the greatest team THE Ohio State University. Why did I feel that I needed anything else when I had football? The answer was obvious, not to choose a team.
I mean seriously put a soccer team and a football team on a field together, and just see who comes out victorious. When the World Cup started last summer, I tried to follow it, seriously I tired. During evey single game I feel asleep. I don't need another sport to nap during when I already have Nascar.
Sorry soccer, but this is one girl who could never imagine being fan.
Soccer is super lame. You will always look back on this decision with relief.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you ever watched the show Sports Night, but it was an amazing Aaron Sorkin-created dramedy about the making of a Sports Center-esque show.
One of the anchors of the fictional show, Dan, totally hates soccer and it's awesome:
Dan: I'll tell you what else. I'm starting to get a little cheesed at people telling me the reason I don't like soccer is that I don't understand it. I think I do understand it. I think I understand it just fine. I just happen to think it's a mind-numbing bore, and that any reasonable person would rather be playing it than watching it.
***
Dan (on air): We'll bring you the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and because we've got soccer highlights, the sheer pointlessness of a zero-zero tie.
***
Dan (on air): I know we promised you soccer highlights, so let me just tell you that Columbus beat Miami 1-0, Dallas beat San Jose 1-0, Chicago beat Colorado 1-0, and New England beat Kansas City 2-1 in an offensive slugfest. A modest proposal: make the nets bigger.
but what about Federbachi?
ReplyDeleteI know it isn't spelled right, but I couldn't find it.
Fenerbahçe
ReplyDeleteJon I need to watch that show. I've never even heard of it but I already think it's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteMom, of course I would pick Fenerbahce, but they weren't in the league either.
